Lunchtime Music – Johnny & the Mo-Tones – Shake It!

So the soundtrack for the trip back from the New Gretna exist of the Garden State Parkway was the new album Shake It from the Wisconsin based blues group Johnny & the Mo-Tones. The other day in the first listen I thought what great jump blues, songs that really get you moving! Today, as I listened, I classified the music as both jump blues and jazz-blues (if there is such a sub-genre), so when I came home and saw that the leader of the band “piano & keyboard player, songwriter and founder of the MoTones; John Altenburgh has been recording albums since…

Exploring the word “One” and some morning music from Tab Benoit!

So yesterday I was thinking about being ordinary. The first song wanted to listen to “Ordinary Town” from Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer. So I scrolled down through the list of songs on the iPod until I got to it. Along the way, I must have passed thirty songs that had the word One in the title! So after listening to “Ordinary Town” I went back and listened for a while to those “One” songs. Here’s the play list! “The One” – Cabinet – a bluegrass, Americana band that I don’t listen to enough! “One” – Dreamscape – some Prog…

Book 12 of 2013 – Impeached: The Trial of President Andrew Johnson and the Fight for Lincoln’s Legacy

First a comment on my March reading. I started the month reading James Lee Burke’s Creole Belle and three non-fiction books. Impeached by David O. Stewart, The Armistad Rebellion by Marcus Rediker and Kofi Anann’s Interventions. I had also gotten out of the library The Blood Gospel by James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell. By the middle of the month, I had made the most progress on the David Stewart book and minimal progress on the others. About the day before Blood Gospel was due back at the library, I started reading it. No wait, it was actually overdue when I started it! Anyway…

“Into the Night” with the Blues Harp of Brandon Santini

So the other day I listened to the latest album from Memphis Blues Harp player Brandon Santini, This Time Another Year I really liked it, both his harp playing and his vocals were great, at times he reminds me of Leon Russell and at other times Dr. John. From his website: There are many different opinions as to what the future of the blues harmonica will be. Memphis vocalist and harmonica player Brandon Santini is undeniably a worthy player to keep an eye on as the latest surge of young blues artists leave their footprint in blues history. His name…

New Blues – Bex Marshall – The House of Mercy

Bex Marshall’s album The House of Mercy caught my eye a couple of weeks ago and I had no idea how he artist was, so I went to MOG put on the album and was blown away by the title track!! So after being sufficiently impressed by the first listen to the album I went the Bex’s website and discovered that Bex was born in Devonshire England and now lives in London. She is the offspring of a diverse family one side being blue blooded landed gentry, the other Irish Romany. She’s been playing guitar since her Uncle Dave presented…

Book Number 9 of 2013 – The President and the Assassin….

Ok so which of the four people pictured above can you identify? Before I read Book Number 9 for 2013, I could have maybe identified two! The first two are the key players in the book, while persons three and four helped nudge number two along! The first two are William McKinley and Leon Czolgosz, who are The President and the Assassin, respectively, from Scott Miller’s  terrific book titled – The President and the Assassin:McKinley, Terror, and the Empire at the Dawn of the American Century. Persons three and four are anarchist Emma Goldman and Albert Parsons.  both of whom provided a…

“Into the Night” with the Blues Harp of Mitch Kashmar!

So after listening to Kevin Selfe’s album last night and thinking about Mitch Kashmar lending his harp prowess to the album, made me feel like listening to a little Mitch Kashmar tonight!. So on my way back from the DMV I put on the Mitch Kashmar and Pontiax album 100 Miles and listened to several tracks. Once again I will say, by writing this blog and concentrating on finding and listening to new music, I don’t get enough time to listen to some of my favorites, and Mitch is one of them! He is a great blues artist and boy can…

Life’s Soundtrack: A Good Sceond Run with some Great Blues from Kevin Selfe!

So it was a pretty mice day today in the Delaware Valley, temperature somewhere in the mid-40s, light almost until 6, no excuses for not running! So I hit the road, I ran the same course as the last time almost a week ago, but this time I went a little farther and the run was a little easier! I averaged around 10:!4 per mile, but again I’m just starting to build some miles again, so I’m not worried about time, just as long as I’m little faster and can go farther I’m fine! The soundtrack for the run was…
