Steve Krase Band – Just Waitin’ – Gets A Body Moving!!

Just Waitin’ – Steve Krase Band Over the last few years one of my favorite blues harmonica players has been Steve Krase. So the other day when I saw his latest release Just Waitin’  on Spotify I knew it would be going into my music rotation. The other morning I decided that it would be the soundtrack for my morning walk. “Settin’ the Woods on Fire” opened the album and started my walk off on the right foot. The only problem was the song sounded a lot more rockabilly than bluesy! Not that it was a problem because Krase handled…

Late Summer and Fall 2017 Playlist – Americana and Blues

A  Six Pack Playlist of Americana/Folk and Blues and More I may never be able to catch up writing about the various albums I have been listening to over the last three to four months.  So I have decided to make a few playlists that will group the tracks roughly by genre. Here;’s what’s on the first one…. Americana – Folk       Lew Jetton & 61 South – Palestine Blues  I started listening to this album, when we spent a week at the Jersey Shore back in August. It was the soundtrack for a couple of the runs…

Today in Music – October 24,1911 – The Great Sonny Terry was born!!

The joyous whoop that Sonny Terry naturally emitted between raucous harp blasts was as distinctive a signature sound as can possibly be imagined. Only a handful of blues harmonicists wielded as much of a lasting influence on the genre as did the sightless Terry (Buster Brown, for one, copied the whoop and all), who recorded some fine urban blues as a bandleader in addition to serving as guitarist Brownie McGhee’s longtime duet partner.(From Blues Harp) Today we can remember that joyous whoop and celebrate the 102nd birthday of one of my favorite acoustic blues musicians Sonny Terry. Sonny was born…

Night Owl Music: The Trip from The Folk Sinner to Sonny Landreth’s “Z Rider”

Ok so Sonny Landreth is one of those musicians whose music is included in my library, but gets lost in the midst of the 18,000 plus tracks  on my iPod! But yesterday, when I paid a visit to YouTube and watched the video that closes this post. I was blown away by Landreth’s slide playing!! Words like you “doofus” and “idiot” came to the forefront of my mind, as I castigated myself for not listening to more of Sonny;s music!! You maybe asking yourself, now., how did he get around to listening to Sonny Landreth yesterday?? Wasn’t he listening to…

Thursday Music Mix – Quintus McCormick, Blind Corn Liquor Pickers and Shake Russell

So some days are diamonds, some days are dirt. Well today was a musical diamond day! I put three albums on the iPod this morning and I really like them all! The first up was a blues album from the Quintus McCormick Blues Band whose latest album Put It On Me  is currently number 39 on the Roots Music Report Blues Chart. When I went to Napster they only had 30 second clips for the album but they did have his debut album Hey Jodie , so that’s what went on the player. and I tell you it’s a great album. According…

Saturday’s Music Mix – Part 1 – Hot Tuna

So with a night off. I was able to do a little music listening last night. The mix was eclectic. The night started listening to the first studio album from Hot Tuna in twenty some years, Steady as She Goes! For those of you who don;t remember Hot Tuna or simply weren’t around Hot Tuna was a side project of Jefferson Airplane. The main members were Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady. Their first album Hot Tuna was a collection of concerts performed at New Orleans House in Berkeley  in September, 1969, and released in 1970. According to Wikipedia this album…

Blues and Folks – Loomis, Carroll and O’Connor!

So over the last few days I’ve been listening to two albums from artists that I listened to briefly, decided I really didn’t care for them so I haven’t really listened since then. Shame on me! Both of the artists are from Texas one is a blues man, Hamilton Loomis and the other a folkie, well, actually two folkies Adam Carroll and Michael O’Connor. I listened to Loomis’ 2010 release Live in England and Carroll and O’Connor’s Hard Times. Hamilton Loomis’ mentor, was the great Bo Diddley whose advice to Loomis was “Innovate don’t imitate!” And Loomis has done just…

New Folk – Shaun Cromwell – Folk-Worn Prose

So I went from being on furlough for a week and a half to working nine plus hours a day outside! Now yesterday was fine and tomorrow looks ok, but today it was damn cold especially in the AM. Now I had a drive to the site, which was in Philly out on Lancaster Avenue, but instead of paying attention to the music playing I had to pay attention to things like traffic, traffic lights and stop signs!! Reminds me of that old Morey Amsterdam joke about walking in New York traffic being musical “you either c sharp or b…
