Saturday Playlist Part 1 – B. Scaggs, Lou Donaldson and Wes!

Ok so yesterday I did some reading and a lot of little things around the house. The soundtrack and ultimately a playlist for the day came from a variety of music, from a variety of musical media. Since there are six artists and twelve songs, I am dividing my Saturday playlist into two posts. Each post will feature three artists and sox songs on the playlist So let’s go!!

Boz Scaggs – Moments

First came some music from an album that has been in my music library since the early 70s, Moments from Boz Scaggs. After he left the Steve Miller Band, Boz released four albums before he hit the big time with Slow Dancer and its follow up album Silk Degrees. While my favorite of those albums is the self-titled Boz Scaggs.  Moments is probably my second favorite. Two of my favorite tracks on the album are “ We Were Aways Sweethearts” and “Painted Bells”

After listening to Boz, I actually switched genres and left viny, I instead listened to a  jazz CD. I listened to Caracas from alto saxophone player Lou Donaldson.

Lou Donaldson – Caracas

The album was released in 1994 and in addition to Donaldson features: Dr Lonnie Smith on organ, Peter Bernstein on guitar, Kenny Washington on drums and Ralph Dorsey providing conga in “Hot Dog” and “Caracas”.

I love this group Dr Lonnie is one of my favorites and I have listened to Peter Bernstein both as a sideman and a leader and have always enjoyed his work. Likewise I have heard Kenny Washington on a bunch of albums.

The two albums I included on the playlist are the first track “Hot Dog” and the Charlie Parker – Benny Harris jazz standard “Orinithology”.

Wes Montgomery – The Best of Wes Montgomery

After moving a few things around in our overcrowded basement, I discovered a few albums that had been left behind, when I decided to move my old vinyl up from the basement. One of those albums was one I was looking for The Best of Wes Montgomery.  The album contains cuts from four of  Wes’ previous Verve albums Movin’ Wes, Bumpin’ , “Goin’ Out of My Head” and “Tequila”. And served as a great introduction to the man’s great guitar work for a young me!

The two songs I placed on the playlist are: “Tequila” and “Bumpin’ on Sunset” They are two of my favorites!

So the first music I listened to on Saturday came from two vinyl albums spinning on my record player, while the other came from a CD in my 5 CD tape deck!
