The Other Sides of My Life

Ok so this is going to be like my blog within my blog. I’m naming it, „The Other Sides of My Life“. It will be about my life, when I’m not reading. Which is surprisingly a large part of my day and maybe the most important.

Well, let‘s see! Today, I started with a light 20 minute workout that burned about 200 calories. Then I stopped at Wawa on my way to Trader Joe‘s and had a breakfast sandwich that was probably 400 plus calories.

Why I’m Trying to Learn German

On the way to Trader Joe‘s I listened to a podcast „Learning German by Podcast.“ For the last few years I have been trying to teach myself German. There are two basic reasons.

First, language is something that I suck at, both English and German. And I suck at German more because of der, die, das den dem and the rest of them! And dropping out of my second semester of a required German course cost me graduating on time!

The second reason is that on my paternal side both families are German immigrants. Both sides of my father‘s maternal line came from Saxony to America between  1910-1915.

My paternal grandfather was born in Delran, NJ in 1898. His father Henry Karn came from Hesse in 1882, settled first in Brooklyn, NY and married Pauline Hechler in 1887. Pauline‘s Family had emigrated from Switzerland in the early 1880s.

My wife has over the last several years given me several Christmas presents relating to my German roots. Here is this years present….

It is a Dresden Souvenir candle from 13gramm.com. It shows a detailed view of the Dresen skyline and includes. Churches, buildings, and bridges. I believe that many of the buildings shown lie on the western side of the Elbe River which flows through Dresden.

I believe that they lived near many of these buildings.

Back to My Day…

Ok so thinking about why I was listening to „Learn German by Podcast has hijacked this post! I started by writing about my day, which after returning from Trader Joe‘s included my second 5K training run in 2022.

The run was over the course I run most of the time. While it was not as fast or easy as I would have liked i did. it! Here are the Nerdy Details….

The Soundtrack for My Run

Do right Say Right - Mississippi MacDonalcThe soundtrack for the run was Do Right, Say Right by Mississippi MacDonald.I’ve listened to this album a few times now and I really like it. There are are some really good guitar licks throughout the album and I like Mississipi‘s voice. I’ll try to write about the album in another post.

Here‘s some information about Mississippi MacDonald, in case you like me, know nothing about him….

Mississippi MacDonald is a 3 times British Blues Awards nominee, from London, England. He has been playing since he was 11 years old and has travelled extensively on the US blues trail, meeting, amongst others, Pinetop Perkins, Willie Big Eyes Smith, Otis Clay and BB King. In 2010, he was part of the team that purchased a gravestone for the late Hi Records recording artist and soul legend, OV Wright.

Mississippi’s albums, “Dress For The Money” and “American Accent” reached number 1 and 3 respectively in the UK IBBA Blues Charts. American Accent was one of the top 10 IBBA albums of 2016, and was the “Blues Is Back” Album of the Year, 2017. Read More
